President Obama and other Asian and Pacific world leaders recently gathered in Bejing for the APEC summit. As has become the custom at these types of events, this gathering saw world leaders don local garb for the group photo, in this case a modern take on traditional Chinese attire. And since Obama can’t do anything right in some people’s eyes, he received a hefty amount of criticism for the look in the press (as if it was his decision). My favorite headline was from the Washington Post (link): Obama mocked for APEC attire in China: ‘Is this a new ‘Star Trek’ episode?’
Even Stephen Colbert weighed in, likening the outfit to a Starfleet uniform:
I don’t care what anyone says. That’s a cool suit. It’s the 21st century, can’t we lose the ties already? What purpose do they serve? And why are we still wearing suits that look like modern day cowboy costumes? The Chinese suit they wore is sleek and practical—there’s no tie to get in the way! And best of all, you don’t have to tuck in your shirt! Seriously, where can I get one?
