I was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama where my grandfather, father and uncle ran a small family business called Sanford Tile Co. My grandfather thought it was important for me to learn the value of work from an early age so he had me work at the shop during summer vacations starting when I was six years old. In fact, that first summer I saved up enough money to buy my first Nintendo!

After graduating from St. James High School I moved to Tuscaloosa and studied biology at the University of Alabama. It was there that I met my first Japanese friends and began taking Japanese classes. I did a study abroad in Japan during my final year of school. After a couple of years back in Alabama, I returned to Japan as an English teacher, first teaching high school in Osaka and now working at a private English conversation school in Tokyo.

I’m passionate about craft beer, basketball, branding, sustainability, hemp clothing and B Corps.
